wait for quad-core AMD (or Intel if you must) if you can hold off a few months.

If you are going with dual core, right now for the first time in ages Intel has the edge over AMD. I'm using an AMD 64x2 4400 chipset at the moment, works fine for me. (Running Vanguard, EQ2, BF2142 and LoTR Online with very little performance problems) my nephew is using an intel dual-core and it's faster on apps. I cannot tell any differance in gaming at all.

Pricewise, Intel is always far more expensive, though the price spread is shrinking more between the companies every year.

Don't listen to those guys Sidd... they don't know what their talkin 'bout.
The Core 2 Duo and AMD are both tag teams in wrastling...
The Core 2 Duo are a Hard Core, smash mouth, mask wearing brother team from Phily... 215 representing! Their signature move is the Soft-Core Rear Nakid Choke.
The AMD currently are the Tag Team Champs but keep forgetting they hold the belts... cuz AMD stands for Alzheimers Mental Disorder. Not much is known 'bout them since they rarely get interview... either they can't remember or they repeat the same answer over 'n over.
Hope this helps ya out.

(I apologize if anyone takes offense to my making fun of Alzheimers.)

I prefer AMD over Intel myself. I usually build my own machines. Currently I am waiting on the next generation AMD chip before i build a new one. Intel are good, but way overrated IMO and way over priced IMO. If I were running a straight up office computer with alot of apps and such, i would be opting for the intel in a Dell model PC perhaps(superb application) for high end use though, graphics oriented applications and games The AMD out performs hands down. There is a program that monitors your system that side by side shows the AMD chip runs cooler in any given application than a intel.

If you are a overclocker AMD chips can be often enough over clocked 200 percent without significant temperature variations. I personally would not over clock a proc by more than 40 or 50 percent though.

But this is just my opinion. And is only intended for the really really hard core PC user. for the average Joe out there with limited skill and need there will be no significant difference between any of the available chipsets out there and any will do just fine. Slo

Cool thanks. I have been building my own pc's for quite awhile. I've always gone intel, except early one I had. An early AMD....K2 maybe, I don't remember. My laptop I got about 5 months ago is an AMD which actually is better than my desktop....it's about 2 years old. I didn't go with the intel mobile in my laptop. All my research led to me thinking the AMD would be a better gaming machine, and it's worked well. I mainly mess with graphics, games, and internet. My focus when building is usually the graphics card, ram, and processor. Didn't touch the celeron or the duron. I overclocked a small bit but not much, always to chicken and I don't have any cooling other than 2 extra fans.
What got me thinking about this, was an article about building a good DX 10 machine for 1500 and the processor they used was the core 2 duo.
