Dr. Who

Since Battlestar Galactica is on hiatus UNTIL JULY, I sat through Sci Fi channels rehash of Dr. Who.

I didn't watch the original series, but I know it had (has) a big cult following.

How does this verion stack up against the original storyline? I myself thought it a little cheesy. It was trying too hard to be "campy".

The new ones are missing the scarf and fluffy hair... lol I did see the movie that was out, at somepoint... That was not only cheesy, but was... Well... Was a weekend flick, to pass time when your bored...

You're not interrupting.

I started this thread to invite discussion.

As for myself, I love British comedy and (some) drama. The show Red Dwarf was ROTFLOLF. Even more sedate shows like As Time Goes By staring the wonderful Dame Judi Dench are great.

I wouldn't call the new Dr. Who "British" just because it has British actors, it seems more American in flavor. CGI does not a good story make.

Dr. Who Definitely has a huge cult following. I have tried many times to sit and watch them but I am constantly reminded of American Soap Operas which is what i wish to say here. That i think Dr. Who is more of a Soap Opera than a Sci Fi adventure.

I would say I am qualified in the Sci Fi arena since I own the Star Gate Series (the first 8 years thus far) Atlantis First Season, The complete Original BattleStar Gallactica series. Carnivale Season 1, I watch SG1 Mondays which is SG-1 all evening long SG Fridays which we know is SG 1 then atlantis then BSG, well i am getting off topic here but....

The Original has a huge following and I am not sure what this new one will do yet, more than likely have results like Star Trek the next generation did. (was a season or two before old trekies came on board)

Lets wait and see.. SLo

Actually it wasn't until season four that ST:TNG got into its groove.

I can see Dr. Who turning into a Quantum Leap with Daleks if they don't have good writers.

Not that Quantum Leap was a bad show, but it got a little repetitive.

It did, but it was still a great show and was disapointed when it ended. ST:TNG was good, but did take some time to get used to. Still, I think the Trekies are generally devided, Those of the Old ones and the NG ones...
What killed ST was the addition of DS9, Voyager and Enterprise...

The old Dr.Who was deffintatly a Soap Opera, much like Dark Shadows was. Good, in a classic cheesy kind of way...

<Whispers> And Monty Python still sucks! ;-p

DUDE, Jim, will ya copy me Carneval? I love that show! Was soooo disapointed that it was canceled... =(

Have to say i started out as a Old Trekki,, but the beginning of the second season of ST:TNG made me a die hard TNG fan. almost cried when it ended.

Yea Tiger I was sick when Carnivale was canceled. But i have to agree with HBO they had pretty much told the story and it was time to move on.

Its like the show they had out this year "Surface" They got one season out of it, and looks like they will get a 2nd season out of it. But i doubt more than that.

Since we are all off topic,, i have to say i really really hate Reality TV. i hate Survivor, Idol, the bachelor, Joe Schmo. If i wanted reality i would turn the TV off. there plenty of it going on all around me. This to me shows that Hollywood is reaching the ends of its creativity ability. Now they are turning to Reality TV, Remaking older classics and really messing them up, and taking good plots and storylines and loading them with overpaid and underskilled actors.

I miss John Wayne, Audy Murphy, James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor, back in the day when hollywood was another world.

Did you know John Wayne's highest paid contract netted him $250,000.00

He would roll over in his grave to see Swharzenegger and Cruise pulling down 20 million a picture. Mind you I am not saying they dont earn it. In this particular case those two guys are pretty good at what they do. and we after all the customer do pay hundreds of millions to see these pictures. so they need to get their share of the pot.

Well anyhow this is another off topic rant for the thread!! Slo

ST:TNG Season 5 was the absolute greatest. I never did get into these new sci fi shows like Firefly, new Dr. Who, or new Battlestar Galactica.

From what the spirits tell me, Firefly was a good show.

The new Battlestar Galactica is probably my favorite show on TV now. I really like having the coherent storyline. And I knew the show would be cool when it recognized the most important person on the ship was the Chief. Pilots...bah! Commanders...bah! The guy who runs the flight deck and keeps the ships in the air...THAT's the real hero.
