If any of you followed the goings-on over at FauxINN.com before its recent disappearance, you may have already heard something about this project. I have been working for some time now on developing an emulated server system that will allow you to get on-line using the original INN client software.

The project has had great success over the past few months, and I am currently preparing to open up my server for its first round of public demonstration / testing. I'd like to invite anyone that reads here to visit the projects current website where you will find information about what is required to get on-line, and how to sign up to be notified about testing events.

If there is enough interest before the date, I would like to have the first public test on the afternoon/evening of Saturday, March 24th. If I don't get enough responses before then, I will reschedule for Saturday March 31st, or the next Saturday, etc...

Currently the server supports chat and gaming in the "Clubhouse" land. Many of the games have been tested and are at least partially working but most have not been tested to completion. Right now I am working on getting the same features working for SierraLand (Waiting Rooms with basic chat are working, but game invitations and therefore games don't work yet.)

A note on Yserbius:
When I was active on TSN/INN, I spent the majority of my time in MedievaLand. It is definitely a feature that I would like to get working but because of differences in the programming implementation of the MedievaLand games compared to the other lands it will be a significantly more difficult task to get them working.

We are a captive audience here. I am sure when the time comes to test this server we can find a few people interested in helping out. Meanwhile if you would like to use these forums to post updates or whatever please feel free to use this place. I am so looking forward to getting using the original software. thanks for your efforts.. Slo

So far I have had very few responses about the demo this weekend, so I will push back the "official" time until at least next weekend (Saturday March 31st or Sunday, April 1st)

In the meantime, I have set up an IRC channel #revival on irc.freenode.net. This channel can be used for discussion of the project, which will hopefully lead to some "unofficial" testing of the INN server. I'm trying to keep myself connected there most of the time but I'm not always available to talk.

SierraLand News: I got invitations working in SL and played a short game of Boogers! against myself this morning. I'll be checking out other games but I imagine most of the SL games should be working now, with the exception of Red Baron and 3D-Golf.

If you're looking for any help with code (which you probably are not), I have experience in a decent variety of languages including C++, and I'd be more than willing to help out in the time that I do have.

The server is written in C#/.NET. I'm not really looking for help with programming on the server though. The difficult part of the project is figuring out what the client is doing. To help with that you would need to learn all about LSCI (Large-model Sierra Creative Interpreter) and basically how to write programs for it. Then you would be able to assist in reverse-engineering the client program and figuring out new parts of the messaging protocol. If you feel up to doing that, we should talk.

An update on the project:

Because I've only been contacted by two people about participating in scheduled tests, I have decided to scrap that idea for the time being. Instead what I am going to do is focus on making the current functionality of the server more usable, and then leave it running most of the time and open to the public. Until there is significantly more interest I don't want to even begin to think about setting up an official testing program.

There are a couple of big problems that I need to fix on the server to get it ready. For instance, once you leave a Waiting Room in the Clubhouse the game will freeze if you try to re-enter the Waiting Room. Similarly, if you leave a SierraLand Waiting Room and try to re-enter, the game crashes. These problems have proven to be a major headache to diagnose and fix.

Please remember that sometimes these boards are looked at alot, and other times, its very very slow!

I am just now reading the posts, and the interest is there! I'll do what it takes to get it back.

This project cant be dead; can it? I sent an email to byoung, letting him know I could prolly get 10 computers on at one time for him from my business to beta test for him.

If anyone talks to him, let him know that I want to help! :p

I'm having a hard time finding the server for the irc channel posted above. Can anyone help me? I'm not great with mIRC, and I might be doing it wrong.

Something came up quite suddenly and I was on the road much of the last 4-5 days. I had my laptop with me and did manage to get a few things done in the little free time I had.

I have set up DNS for the INN server which I will try to keep running most of the time, when I am not actively working on the software. The server can be found at innrevival.game-host.org, port 17 (innrevival.game-host.org:17). I've updated the instructions at the website.

I can't guarantee that anyone will be on-line to greet you, but the server is there (most of the time now) for you to check out.

Besides that I love this site here on Ysebius.org another big reason I came here was for this project your working on so I hope you continue... Heard about this site from our MRA guild mates (Mystical Realm of Asgard in case you don't know ;) ) on our guild forums... As a guild created from INN/YS with a small, but great group of people from all over the US(and now the world) we have been together for nearly 16 years?! LOL.. long time... As the online Rpgs came and went we have been hopping from game to game and currently strung across many online games now... AC, DAOC, WOW, and others... ~/ ..I can't guarantee them to participate, but I know some are interested in trying your project out to help... The feel of nostalgia is great for me since INN & Medieval land started my computer addiction... :p

WOOHOO! I'm up and running!
Have you actually been online? The server logs haven't been showing anyone connecting, although the logs do get overwritten any time I reset the server. I really need to fix that.

I've been doing a lot of work on the server yesterday and today, so it has been down a lot of the time. I was trying to get Red Baron working, but that is not going well. Right now, when you finish an invitation, the person that sent the invite crashes (DOSBox completely shuts down, which is very odd) and anyone that received an invitation will freeze up when INN tries to launch RB.EXE. It's looking like DOSBox just doesn't like something about the Red Baron program and I won't be able to get it working. I'm going to try out the offline version of Red Baron when I can find the CD and see if it has the same problem.

I'm having a hard time finding the server for the irc channel posted above.
Sorry I didn't respond to this sooner. In mIRC if you type "/server irc.freenode.net" that should connect you to the proper server. Then you should be able to access the channel by typing "/join #revival"

BYoung, do you want me to run it all day to stress it for you, and setup a time to run 8+ comps?
Running all day probably won't work since I'm bringing the server down a lot today while I'm working on it. If there is a time that is convenient for you to get all of those systems running (particular time of day, or a certain day) just let me know and I will make sure the server is up and running then. I would also like to be around to observe the server's performance in that situation.

Okay I get my T-1 up and running on the 19th of this month. Lets schedule the 21st, and I can have 8 computers for sure up and running. I just have to DL dosbox and your stuff for each of those computer. My server will be up and running this Thursday. So barring any issues I can be ready for you April 21st.

Is that good for you? I can leave them on all the day and sunday, you can run tests or anything you need to do. I might even be able to run some old school mouse macros to facilitate the computers DOING something on your server. Playing some game, going in and out of the gaming lodges - whatever. That will take a bit more time to setup for me though.

Let me know what you think.

Yes, I was online this morning a couple of times. Tonight i'm going to get my second home computer running it and have my fiancee play a couple games with me.
