How did you finish the Wizard's area (Thaumaturgium)? I can get to the middle, but can't figure out how to make the teleportal stop disappearing.

By the way, it seems like the Thief's area (Skulkatorium) can only be solved by a Thief. I've tried picking the locks with other classes, but it doesn't work.

Are you talking about this door:

"Funny how an irksome little lock on a flimsy little door can keep out a big strong person like you."

This door will open under any of the following conditions:

1. You have any lockpick in inventory and use Alfred's Hat item

2. You have Lockpick skill and use any lockpick

3. Skeleton Keyring item is used

The items in question are found in the following locations:
Skeleton Keyring = "L4: The Music Room"
Alfred's Hat = "L5: The Kitchen"

It seems the only way to get through that door is after you get at least one of the two items, unless you are a Thief or somehow get Lockpick skill.

You've obviously done extensive analysis of the code and resource files, patchx. Is that really all just with IDA Pro? I've used it before, but only the basic features.

Aha, the Skeleton Keyring can be purchased at the shop. As can the Hawk's Eye, as a substitute for Read Tracks in the Ranger test. So it looks like any character can complete all the rooms.

It's a combination of ida / bochs / dosbox. Bochs allows for tracing the execution paths, including finding the class function calls. After the call stack is logged I use perl for post-processing.

New patch available

New patch for Ruins of Cawdor is available

Changes:
Enabled music under DOSBox

Instructions:
Download the patch and extract patchroc.exe to your game directory, then run patchroc.exe.

Until Slohand updates it in the download area, the patch is available at http://yserbius.googlepages.com/roc

Note that music can be choppy. To lower the "level of choppiness":
  • Edit your DOSBox.conf file
  • Find "[mixer]" section
  • Change "rate" from 22050 to 11025
  • Play around with "blocksize" (256/512/1024/2048/4096/8192)
If anybody can get it to work w/o any choppiness at all, please post the instructions.

Strange...music and sound Just Works for me in DOSBox 0.65, without your new patch. Which is nice, since I remember having to fiddle with things when I wanted to get Darklands sounding good. But now I'm just using the default dosbox.conf, and I don't notice any choppiness or other distortion. It sounds like the usual MIDI music.

Where did you install Cawdor from - the installation of INN or from the file downloaded from this site?

I used your version, but it turns out I happened to have a valid LSCI.CFG in the parent directory, which is what made it work. I don't notice any problems with the audio after trying your newest patched version. It's a little strange that the music is identical to Twinion's, though.

That would make sense - the latest patch changes ..\lsci.cfg to .\cawdor.cfg and creates the config file.

Hi bebeanna,

It seems to me that there is a problem with your installation.

Try doing the following:

Back up the following files:
cawchar.dat
automaps.dat

After backing up the files, reinstall cawdor and re-apply the patch.

Let me know if this doesn't fix your issue.

Best regards,
